When to hire an editor versus a social media manager

A clear way to decide whether the constraint is post-production, channel management or the operating system around both.

Hire for the actual bottleneck

An editor solves a production constraint: raw footage exists, but cutting, captions, pacing and exports are slowing publication. A social media manager solves a channel constraint: planning, publishing, community rhythms and reporting need consistent ownership.

Know what each role needs from you

An editor still needs usable source material and direction. A social manager still needs access to your expertise and timely approval. Neither role can create a sustainable system if the positioning and decision-making remain unclear.

  • Choose an editor when the backlog is mainly footage
  • Choose a social manager when the backlog is mainly planning and publishing
  • Choose an integrated production partner when both problems repeat each week

Start with a defined trial

Use a small project or a clearly scoped first month to test communication, taste and reliability. Agree ownership, turnaround, review limits and success signals before work begins.
